Marc Unternährer studied Classical Music in Luzern, Switzerland. Soon he developed an interest in contemporary music and improvisation. His regular improvising groups include the Chicago Luzern Exchange (with Josh Berman (cornet), Keefe Jackson (ts, bcl) and Frank Rosaly (dr), their CD „Several Lights“ on Delmark Records was listed as one of the top 10 Chicago releases of 2005); Nacktmull (with Singer Isa Wiss, Percussionist Markus Lauterburg and Keyboardist Hans Peter Pfammatter; Pipelines (with Hans Kennel and John Wolf Brennan); a trio with Julian Sartorius on drums and master accordeonist Hans Hassler; a duo with the dancer Christa Naef, and a new approach to Swiss folk music with Albin Brun's NAH Trio. Marc Unternährer was part of several theatre productions, amongst others by Ruedi Häusermann. Ever since his stay at the artist residency in Chicago, provided in 2002 by the Sister Cities Luzern-Chicago, he has entertained many friendships and collaborations with the Chicago improvising scene. He has played and recorded with the Keefe Jackson Project Project, Guillermo Gregorio, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jeb Bishop, Gene Coleman, and many more.
