Ruth Barberán

Ruth Barberán (born 1966 in Barcelona) is a trumpeter and improviser whose work treats the trumpet, air, microphones, speakers and objects as material for acoustic and electroacoustic exploration. She became closely involved with free improvisation through Barcelona’s IBA collective in 1999 and has been one of the musicians closely identified with that scene.

Her principal projects have included I Treni Inerti with Alfredo Costa Monteiro, Atolón with Ferran Fages and Costa Monteiro, Error Focus with Fages, and the quartet Octante. Across these groups and her solo work, Barberán has developed a highly detailed language built from breath, noise, resonance and unstable trumpet timbres.
